Those of you who use Dotaddict, our themes and plugins repository, may have noticed that the server went down a few days ago.
Alas, it was not a hip-cup but a severe hardware problem. Please bear with us, as we are in the process of getting the things up and running on a new server.

Although most of the work was done, we decided not to include it in Dotclear 2.1.6, as it needed a review of pretty much all the code and it would have been too big a chance to break something for the users.
So we released the 2.16, then switched development to the 2.2 branch, where we included all the necessary PHP 5.3 patches. That's this version you will find in our nightly builds. It is of course, as far as we know, compatible not only with PHP's last version but also with the preceding ones.
Several other changes were implemented, none of them should trigger a bigger reaction than a It wasn't quite like that last time...
With one notable exception:
We redesigned the internal settings system: whereas we already used namespaces for it, they were used for setting the value but not for retrieving them. The new design deals with that shortcoming: you'll have to use $settings->namespace->value rather than $settings->value. The old system is still supported, but as it is deprecated, it will raise a notice. Do not forget to deactivate PHP notices in anything close to a production environment (well, you should anyway.)
So go grab it, test it, use it, abuse it, and feel free to ask any question on the forum.

This new version brings a whole bunch of bugfixes. You will find nearly no new functionality but many little thing should work more smoothly here and there.
While I'm here, I would like to apologise for that long silence. Dotclear was all but dead during our "intermission". As a matter of fact, it was a very busy time and several things happened for the project and we have important news.
The main piece of news is that, a few months ago, our friend Olivier decided to leave the project leadership. It was a bit of a shock as he was the creator of Dotclear and its main coder for six years. At first we thought of tying it down to his chair to enslave him but finally decided to acknowledge the fact and let him enjoy his new found freedom.
We quickly decided to carry on anyway, and it is with his blessing that I took the leadership of the team he created years ago to help him on the project. Everything Dotclear related was up until now under Olivier's name. Not being the creator, I did not want to carry on this way and in the last few months, we worked on the creation of a separate legal entity: the Dotclear Association (as in Association Loi 1901, the French legal structure for non-profit organisations.)
At the same time, we started to work on Dotclear itself. The 2.1.6 release is our first one, with nearly no new functionality but we planned it that way to make our teeth, and we did: several dozens of tickets were closed.
For the near future, we planned to be compatible with PHP 5.3, and we will try to rethink the interface to enhance its ergonomics: we recently launched a big user survey for that purpose in our French speaking community.
That brings us to our last point: as refining the whole project after Olivier's departure was all but an easy task, we choose a few months ago to concentrate on the important matters: planning the future, creating the structure, trying to be as familiar with the code that the guy who created it... That is why we were not as communicative that we could have been, and our few communication efforts were mostly directed to our French speaking community, hence our silence here. Be assured that such a long time without any news will not happen any more and that we plan to include you, non French speaking users of Dotclear, involved in the project's life.
Without further ado, here is the new version :
Please note that internal changes were made that could disturb some of your plugins (we updated JQuery to the 1.3 version and support for jquery 1.1 obsolete selectors were removed in this version[1]. A discussion on the forum gives more details on the changes and the attached plugin to ease the transition.)
Thanks for your support!
[1] as per that page: In jQuery 1.3 [@attr] style selectors were removed (they were previously deprecated in jQuery 1.2). Simply remove the '@' symbol from your selectors in order to make them work again.
Dotclear 2.1.5 has just been released to bring two necessary fixes.
A security problem (XSS) in the administration interface is now fixed. Thank you Julien for noticing.
A recent change on Youtube was preventing video insertion from working properly. This new version also fixes this problem.
For those who know how to use them, a patch is also available to upgrapde from 2.1.4 to 2.1.5.
The upgrade is recommended for all users and works as automatic upgrade, so most of you will only have to say "yes" to upgrade.

Dotclear Lab was born from a very simple idea: offering you an easy way to contribute to Dotclear by giving you a space where you can manage the development of your themes and plugins, a place to share what you do and what you know.
That's how was born the successor of dcplugins project initiated by Sacha in 2007.
Dotclear Lab offers any theme or plugin creator a space where they can manage their contributions: a subversion repository, a wiki and a ticket manager.
Dotclear Lab is a human project within which you can interact with each other, confront your ideas, find an answer to your questions or simply share the satisfaction of creating a great theme or a useful plugin.
Please feel free to join us. The project is open to everyone, both theme and plugin creators. We are still in the process of creating pages for each contribution, se don't be surprised if the paint still looks fresh.
Dotclear Lab is primarily dedicated to developers. Therefore, it doesn't replace Dotaddict which was designed with final users in mind.
Now I'll go wave goodbye to 2008, wishing you all an excellent year 2009.

The outcomes are both positive and encouraging, but it's certainly nothing compared to what is coming up in 2009.
For various reasons, Dotclear 2's development had stopped for 8 months then started again early in 2008. The delayed release of Dotclear 2 led many of you to worry about its future, which was perfectly understandable. We put an end to these doubts as we released version 2.0, and confirmed the project's vitality with version 2.1.
You gave Dotclear 2 a very warm and motivating welcome. For version 2.1, we listened to your needs and implemented some of them, particularly the automatic update feature. Thanks to you all for your trust all along this busy year.
Near the end of the year, many of you expressed their support by financially contributing to Dotclear, which demonstrates your interest into the project and its future. Thanks again for donating.
Though in 2008 we focused on releasing Dotclear 2, in 2009 we intend to make all the necessary efforts to grow the user and contributor community, and we've already taking steps in that direction.
Dotclear's main website is now in English, featuring an (almost) full documentation, and the original French website is now at fr.dotclear.org. Other languages will soon be available, and if you have any linguistic talent, we'd be happy to count you in our translation team (to translate Dotclear or the website).
And as we don't want to leave anyone aside, theme and plugin creators will soon receive a nice Christmas present. We will tell you more about this in the next few days.
Finally, because it is a crucial aspect of the project, in 2009 we wish to invite you to join in and participate. We don't aim at playing "who's got the most themes and plugins around". We only wish to see you get involved and enjoy it.
It will be 2009 in a few days and on behalf of all contributors, I sincerely thank you for your support and wish you great holidays as well as an excellent new year 2009.
More personally, I would like to thank the team for holding on when the times were hard, as well as the new contributors who joined us at the end of the year. You are all doing a great job, thank you!

We also take advantage of this update to implement enhancements and fixes into the WordPress import tool. Thanks to Chris Pepper who made it possible.
Finally, Dotclear's XML-RPC server has been enhanced to better manage the sometimes strange behavior of some blog clients.
All Dotclear 2.1.3 users should be prompted to update their installation automatically. The update process from 2.1.3 to 2.1.4 was tested on several hosts and works smoothly.
If the automatic update is not working for some reason, we invite you to let us know on the forum and to proceed with a manual update.
For those who know how to use this, a patch is also available to update from 2.1.3 to 2.1.4.

Presently in test phase, this service will be available for everyone, be they customers of the ISP or not.
Free.fr has been providing a no-cost web hosting service known as “pages perso” for several years now, and if installing Dotclear 1 on this platform was not always easy, things changed after the release of Dotclear 2.0 this summer as Yohan, “pages perso” manager, decided to offer PostgreSQL along with MySQL, making it very easy for people with blogs running on Dotclear 1 to migrate to Dotclear 2. Free.fr made other moves to make using Dotclear on “pages perso” smoother and finally decided to offer Dotclear blogs.
A few mails and discussions later, the result is on blog.free.fr. So far the feedback is excellent. One of our French user reported that setting up a Dotclear blog of Free.fr platform barely took 20 seconds. The platform offers the most recent themes and Yohan should add specific enhancements to the platform in the near future. On the technical side, Free.fr blog platforms runs with only one installation of Dotclear, taking full advantage of the multi-blog functionality of the engine.
We are very excited that Dotclear was chosen to run this no-cost, add-free platform, and we think it's a great opportunity for people who wish to start a blog but don't like the technical aspects of installing and managing their own blog application.

The process had a serious problem as it was only possible to update your Dotclear version once. Not very useful, we agree.
So the update system was partially reviewed to fix the problem, and improved in the process.
Unfortunately, you can't update your 2.1 or 2.1.1 version with the new system as it contains the previous one. I tried to find a way for you to enjoy the new system, but it was much more complicated to implement it (for you) than to simply update your blog using the traditional method. So you'll have to wait for 2.1.4 (or 2.2) to try it.
The new update system will also allow those interested to update to the intermediate versions (nightly, beta, RC...). We will tell you more about this when the time comes.
We added some more tags and attributes for your templates:
A few bugs were fixed too, including the insertion of an incomplete HTML code for videos in Internet Explorer 7.
Finally, a minor XSS breach was fixed. The breach happened at a time when the user was not connected and would have required to click on a bad link. We still recommend you update to 2.1.3, of course :)

Dotclear 2.1.1 has just been released to fix some minor problems some users had with version 2.1. We take this opportunity to release a magazine theme: Noviny.
I was about to tell you about the automatic update and the various problems caused by non binary FTP transfers, but I've just found out a slightly bigger problem — an essential file is never updated and prevents next automatic updates from completing).
We will fix the automatic update problem — and most probably prevent automatic update for versions prior 2.1.2. In the meanwhile, version 2.1.1 having been released already, there's no reason not to use it :)
Be sure I'm really sorry for this problem, we had tested everything but the consequent updates. For the moment, the automatic update is disabled.
If it helps you update your installation more easily, here's a list of changed files from version 2.1 to 2.1.1.

Noviny means "newspaper" in Czech — you're going to think we're obsessed ;) This theme is primarily a demo of what Dotclear is capable of and requires version 2.1.1 or later. Some call it a "magazine" theme, but I prefer to call it a "structured" theme.
Indeed, this theme is all about content structure, and you'll need to put your posts in categories to display them on the front page if you intend to use it.
You can download Noviny from Dotaddict and you can see it at work on my personal blog (before it undergoes a major customization operation).
The menu bar is configurable and the next update will allow the users to choose among various predefined styles.

We heard you and have added some of the features you were asking for. Let's go for a quick tour.
Dotclear 2.1 offers many new tags, such as:
You can now inherit a theme from another theme, which means you can create your own variation from a theme without copying all the files of the original theme. We will soon document this new capacity.
And now you can call any widget at any point of a template. The list of widget tags is available in the online help of the widget page, along with the necessary implementation information.
This is certainly one of the biggest steps of this version. You can now create subcategories with as many sublevels a you want, and control how they're displayed on your blog with the new template functions. Don't worry, this new feature won't break the compatibility of your Dotclear 2.0 themes. At worst, the Categories widget will look a bit odd on certain themes.
If you have a custom theme and intend to use subcategories, you will only have minor adjustments to make.
Those of you using an XML-RPC client will be glad to learn that Dotclear 2.1 is not only fully compatible with Movable Type XML-RPC API but also with that of Wordpress (version 2.7). This means you can configure your blog as Wordpress to be able to edit your blog and static pages from your favourite external client.
M4V files encoded as H.264 and uploaded to the media manager can now be played by the embedded video player.
This Dotclear upgrade may well be the last one you'll have to do. You asked for an automatic update/upgrade, we did it. When the next version of Dotclear is released, a message will notify you that an update or an upgrade is available. Two clicks will then be enough to update or upgrade your version.
Those of you who use an RC version of Dotclear 2.1 may have just enjoyed this new feature. Please note that this automatic update system assumes you have not modified the original installation files. If one or more files have been modified, the update system will not work as we won't try to update a modified installation.
Some of our users seem to think Dotclear is “too French”. That's over. The English website and its blog are now opened (French website here). You can thank Mitternacht a thousand times for the fast translation of the documentation and of the website pages.
This new version is a step forward, a step in the good direction. We will give you more details about some of these new features in the days to come. We promised a magazine theme, it will soon be made available. Tonight, we'll enjoy the release and let you install and discover it all.
Sacha and Tomtom joined the team some time ago, so we're now 15. I'm taking this opportunity to welcome them and thank all the team — they did an amazing job on the French documentation of the template tags, among other things.
Download/Install Dotclear 2.1 - with automated installation, simply upload the installer to your web space and follow the instructions on screen to install and configure your Dotclear blog.

For those who followed the development and the various intermediate versions that were released, here is what's new since version 2.0 RC1:
The very first lines of Dotclear 2 were written 1040 days ago. There have been 2200 code changes and 326 tickets closed. In the meanwhile the documentation got written and, at the beginning of this year, theme and plugin repository Dotaddict was launched.
These 1040 days were not always easy, and saying we went through periods of doubt is clearly an understatement. But anyway, here we are, Dotclear 2.0 is out, it works incredibly well and we must say we're quite proud of it.
I would like to take the opportunity to personally thank all the members of Dotclear's team and all the forum moderators. They're doing a wonderful job, launched Dotaddict and continuously help making Dotclear a better tool.
Thanks to the young translation team, especially Takafumi who made a Japanese translation in a blink of an eye.
Thanks a lot to all the users who contributed, suggested patches or opened tickets since the Release Candidate. I'm thinking of euskaraz, Chty, zeiram, sacha and the others I'm probably forgetting.
And thank to the one who's sharing my life, encouraged me many times, gave me her opinions and showed much patience.
This version is called Můstek and I'll let you guess what it means :)
In a few days, we will tell you what to expect next. For the moment, please download, install and try Dotclear 2.0.

They often chose Wordpress, which is not surprising considering that Dotclear and Wordpress have many features in common.
These common features make switching from one to the other easy, and as the final version will soon be released, we decided to help Wordpress users who would be interested in switching to Dotclear to easily import their data into a brand new Dotclear blog.
The import/export native plugin now features a new module: Import from Wordpress. All you have to do is provide the database connection details. The import process is fully automated and keeps you informed of its progression.
The module worked flawlessly on a blog containg over 1000 posts and several thousands comments. Every hosting provider is a special cas, though, so you're kindly invited to test the module and let us know any issue you may encounter.
Dotclear and Wordpress have many common features but they're also different on e few aspects, and some information had to be adapted. We strongly recommend you check the permissions of the imported uses as the two applications don't have the same permission systems.
Also, in Wordpress you can assign several categories to a single post, while Dotclear chose the other way and a post can only be in one category. So you choose how categories should be imported: you can choose (or not) to import one category per post, and you can choose (or not) to skip the first category (which stands for “no category” on a default Wordpress installation). Finally, you can choose (or not) to import multiple categories as tags.
This module was developed to import a 2.6 version of Wordpress and it might not work on earlier releases. But it's highly probable that it works with any 2.x version.
Please feel free to let us know your comments and suggestions.
